Finding Calm Beyond the Screen: Self-Care Through Art

At The Stitchery Room, I’ve seen firsthand how a simple handmade project can become a daily act of mindfulness.

I don’t think I know anyone who hasn’t been caught in the endless cycle of scrolling through social media or watching one too many episodes of a show. In a world where screens dominate our lives, I’ve found that balancing digital engagement with self-care is more important than ever.

Binge-watching, doom-scrolling, or constantly staying connected online has become second nature. If I’m not out and about with people, I’m probably on my phone, keeping up with those I know—and sometimes even those I don’t. While staying connected is great, too much of it can feel exhausting. That’s why I turn to art as a way to counteract digital fatigue.

Art as a Form of Self-Care

For me, making something with my hands is one of the most grounding things I can do. Whether it’s embroidery, bookbinding, or even just doodling, these activities bring a sense of calm that screens never do. The process itself is therapeutic—the rhythm of stitching, the focus required for each detail, and the joy of watching something come to life. Unlike social media, which often leaves me feeling drained, creating something tangible gives me a real sense of accomplishment.

Making Art a Self-Care Ritual

One of the best ways I’ve found to make time for art is by setting aside screen-free hours. I intentionally put my phone away and carve out time just for creating. Even a small, cozy corner can become the perfect space for this—a nook by the window, a spot near the bookshelf, or a quiet place in a cafe.

Embroidery and bookbinding, in particular, require patience and attention, making them perfect for unwinding. Pottery, painting, or any other hands-on craft can have the same effect.

The Healing Power of Hands-On Creativity

There’s something incredibly mindful about making things with your hands. Unlike passively consuming media, creating is intentional. The repetition of stitching or the fluid strokes of painting feel almost meditative, easing stress and bringing a sense of peace.

By weaving art into my self-care routine, I’m not just taking a break from screens—I’m embracing a slower, more mindful way of living. Whenever I feel overwhelmed by the constant beeps and notifications, I reach for a needle or fold a bookbinding signature. It’s my way of rediscovering the joy of slowing down and truly creating for myself.

How can you get into a self-care ritual?

Start somewhere!

Most people never get around to trying something new because they struggle to start. They feel like they need to gather all the supplies and be fully prepared before diving in. But that’s neither cost-effective nor realistic—those grand plans often never materialize.
